LEGAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MARRIAGE IN BARBADOS
- Applicants must be over 18 years of age.
- Prior to applying for their marriage license the couple must make arrangements for an officiating Minister and obtain a letter from him to take to the Ministry of Home Affairs – The hotel will arrange this in advance for the couple
- This letter, along with the documents outlined below, must be presented to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 5th Floor, General Post Office Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown, St Michael at the time that the application is made for the marriage license. Transport will be provided.
- Documents required are: passport, birth certificate or if no passport a driver’s license or ID card with a photograph.
- If either party was married previously and widowed, a notarized copy of the marriage certificate and death certificate in respect of the deceased spouse will be required.
- If either party was divorced, an original copy of the Decree Absolute and NOT the Decree Nisi. If the Decree Absolute is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by a certified translation.
- Once the application for the marriage license has been made the couple may be married immediately.
- The Marriage Certificate is obtained from the Courts in Bridgetown. This certificate is not always ready prior to the couple’s departure. In cases like this, the hotel will forward the certificate to the couple.
